It’s 2023. Amidst a cold snap, the cost-of-living crisis has hit and global energy prices are spiralling.

Daniel is reading his daughter ‘The Three Little Pigs’, but his life is anything but a fairytale. Little does he know, two “wolves” will soon be banging on his door to pay him an unexpected visit. Can Daniel repel these unwanted visitors and keep his daughter safe, or will his life come tumbling down?

The Wolves at the Door is a dark comedy that takes aim at corporate greed and questions the kindness of strangers.

Writer's Note

The Wolves at the Door is informed by the ongoing energy crisis, focusing on the forced prepayment meter scandal that British Gas (amongst other companies) became embroiled in during 2022. Energy companies (recording record profits) contracted debt management organisations to collect debt arrears from energy customers. Thousands of warrants were procured, without scrutiny, and customers were moved onto prepayment meters. However, vulnerable people were not consulted or warned about the upcoming practice.

The purpose of the play is to explore how, even in extreme times of need, corporate greed overrules compassion; and pushes the most vulnerable further into poverty.

Achingly funny… a clever and hugely entertaining alarm-bell of a play about the way we live now, and the ways in which harsh and unforgiving times begin to change us all.

Joyce McMillan
The Scotsman

Jack Hunter’s writing is sharp… It’s a fairly bleak situation… but this script manages to find the humour in the absurdity of it all.

Natalie O’Donoghue
Broadway World

The subject matter of Hunter’s play is varied in its message… a snappy performance which captured the audience’s attention whilst feeling realistic, sensitive and genuine.

Gabriel Rodgers
